RBJ Power List Recognizes LGBTQ+ Business Leaders

These are some dark days, what with wildfire smoke and with decisions by the Supreme Court and some states that target LGTBQ people and our rights.

But I don’t want to get political.

Instead, I want to celebrate some light.

The Rochester Business Journal announced a new power list, one that celebrates LGBTQ+ business leaders.

While some parts of the country are looking at laws against drag shows and things as simple as going to the bathroom, in Rochester, New York we have a lot to be proud of. And I think the Rochester Business Journal’s power list is an important step forward and speaks to the level of acceptance right here.

In a note accompanying the list, RBJ associate publisher and editor Ben Jacobs wrote, “With LGBTQ+ rights under attack in some parts of the country, it has never been more important to celebrate and cultivate an open and inclusive community that makes everyone feel welcome. The people on this list have worked to create safe spaces, build connections and provide services that allow people to be their true, authentic selves.”

Ben wrote that the RBJ’s editorial department collaborated with members of the LGBTQ+ community to identify candidates. Candidates were able to opt out if they did not feel comfortable being listed.

You can see the list here: rbj.net/2023/06/30/presenting-the-power-list-for-lgbtq-business-leaders/

The list includes people in education, the arts, health care, real estate, government, large and small business and advocacy. I think it speaks to the diversity and strength of this community. That a local publication honors this group speaks volumes at a time when all of us are feeling a little beaten up.

So, thank you to the Rochester Business Journal and to my colleagues and friends who are on this list for the work they’re doing every single day.
